I've been working on my values recently and it's important to me that my business aligns with those values. This was the reason behind what looked like a small update to the craft directories that I built for the yarn community.
So it's with that in mind that I want to highlight 'it is your responsibility to research'. Not just your yarn suppliers, but any business that may be the recipient of funds from your bank account. What do they stand for? Do they operate with integrity?
And what do you stand for? Where does your integrity lie?
What are your values? Are you living by them?
Sometimes you have to compromise between your beliefs and your budget. Sometimes compromising isn't an option. The point I'm trying to make is for a more conscious decision with your purchasing, where possible. A conscious effort with educating yourself. And having the courage to look inward and shine a light on the ugly parts we didn't know had grown there.
I know I have ugly parts, and in order to recognise them I have to understand how they grew. In order to remove them, I have to undo what sustains them. In order to prevent them from growing back I need to be actively anti-racist.
